Stephen Shu Ning Liu was a landlord's son, born on March 16, 1930. He grew up in near the Yangtze River, with six other children. Liu's grandfather taught him the Chinese Classics when he was five. Liu graduated from the University of Nanking, Nanking, China, in May 1948. He then went on to get his B.A. in English in May 1956, from Wayland Baptist College.
